Descrizione del progetto

Description Frase (max. 500 characters):

Mobile ICT training is an ICT training initiative that is aimed at equipping the young people with basic ICT knowledge and skills as a means for literacy improvement and human resource capacity-building, preparing them for future employment. The project targets rural underserved young people in rural areas of Nakaseke, in Central Uganda that have been left behind in terms of ICT skilling, thus bridging the digital informational gap between their counterparts in the urban centres.

Project Summary (max. 2000 characters):

Uganda developed its initial ICT national policy in 2003 in which the framework document recognized that the country needed to embrace the goal of lifelong education for all. The policy also addresses literacy improvement and human resource capacity-building with strategies that include integrating ICT into mainstream educational curricula as well as other literacy programmes to provide for equitable access for all students regardless of level. Efforts have been made to introduce ICT both in primary and secondary schools of Uganda so as to equip learners with the necessary skills and tools that would prepare them for the job market.

Although the country’s national ICT policy lays emphasis on providing infrastructure to schools, this has not yet been realized mainly in rural schools as the adoption level is still low.

There have been hindrances ranging from low income to support the programme, limited power supply to rural schools, shortage of ICT teachers and many others. Irrespective of these challenges, the government has moved on to make ICT education as one of the compulsory subsidiary subjects at secondary levels of education. It is a very big challenge to many rural students and schools as they can’t afford to own computers as their counterparts in urban schools which has created a digital divide among the rural and urban students.

It is behind this background that the Nakaseke Rural Youth Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative was established. The project is conducting an ICT training programme to rural schools and communities to help them acquire skills as a means for literacy improvement and human resource capacity-building in rural areas.

The Nakaseke Rural Youth Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative, a rural youth project that also runs other community development programmes on agriculture and health, started with 3 laptop computers that we used to carry out training. As of now, the project has grown and boasts of 15 mobile computers that can at least accommodate the average class population of 60 students at a ratio of about 4:1. Our project has a committed, competent and experienced training team of trainers with a very rich expertise in conducting and managing ICT training classes. Each day of the week, the team moves to the different schools and communities as per the training schedules. The training involves both theory and practical tailor made lessons.

Describe the results achieved by your project How do you measure (parameters) these. (max. 2000 characters):
We have achieved a number of successes; 1. Since its establishment two years back, the programme has benefited over nine hundred (900) students and out of school youths from the community, among which many have been employed and others have started their own business centres. 2. We have continued to register an overwhelming number of students offering the subject however much it’s a new subject on the national curriculum, to especially rural learners. 3. We have also helped to improve on the way teachers deliver their lessons. We have organized special trainings for them to equip them with skills on how to effectively use ICT tools to simplify their teaching methods. 4. At instructional level, we have been able to help students understand how to use computers to improve their learning using e-resources like Encarta and the Encyclopedia that have added to their general better performance. We have done various assessments and we are keenly monitoring our learners to see their continuity with ICT. We have also been able to find job placement for a number of our youth trainees from our community as our main goal for empowering rural young people for future employment.
How many users interact with your project monthly and what are the preferred forms of interaction? (max. 500 characters):

We usually interact with over 200 young people on a monthly basis.

These we meet them during our school training programmes around the community schools and at our local training hub. We also reach others online through our online platform and by short messages (sms) direct to their mobile phones.

What lessons can others learn from your project? (max. 1500 characters):

Other practitioners can pick some good lessons from our project;

  1. That we can use the available resources to support our local communities not waiting for donations and grants only.
  2. That ICT skilling can help the young people cope up with this ever changing world of technology.
  3. That as individuals, we can help do something towards community development without waiting for our governments.

Barriers and Solutions (max. 1000 characters):
1. First, rural communities had a bad attitude towards technology which required a lot of sensitization for mindset change of our communities. 2. Startup equipment and facilities like hardware. Such equipment is still very expensive in Uganda and this required much investment with no external support. 3. Frequent hardware and software breakdowns that require replacements and routine maintenance. 4. Unstable or completely no power supply to rural communities has greatly affected our lessons at some point, as computer power runs out and the alternative is costly to maintain. 5. Poor transport infrastructure has also greatly affected our programme and this has caused hardware breakdowns. 6. There is limited access and connectivity to the internet. Many times, we have failed to conduct internet-related lessons such as web design, email and internet searching, due to poor connectivity. Among the many challenges we have, we are trying to make strides to solve some of them. 1. We are seriously trying to partner with government to increase on the hardware equipment we have for better access. 2. We have trained a well qualified technical team to help us with hardware and software breakdowns. 3. We have started engaging our local government to support our cause to improve transport and electricity infrastructure in the rural areas we operate in. 4. We are already hopeful about the government's effort to move the internet backbone around most rural areas which will improve the connectivity.
Future plans and wish list (max. 750 characters):
1. Considering the ever increasing demand for ICT training services, we are aiming at increasing our reach to further rural young people so as to give them equal opportunities to access and get skilled. 2. We are also looking forward to adding more and better training equipment to accommodate the ever increasing demand for the service. (like projectors, computers and other digital gadgets) 3. We are planning to start up ICT training camps during school breaks (holidays) to equip more youths who may not be beneficiaries of our routine schools outreaches with skills. 4. We have plans of establishing a fully-fledged vocational training centre that will offer mainly ICT training and other developmental courses and programmes in order to equip the young generation with skills that would contribute to sustainable livelihoods. 5. We are eagerly looking forward to partner with global players of ICT to increase and improve our skilling program. 6. We also hope to spread the idea to other rural communities to give chance to many more young people around the country.

Engaging young people in project work is not a new phenomenon. Traditionally, however, a youth project has been one that is conceived (and typically implemented) by adults on behalf of young beneficiaries. The Global Changemakers approach enabling young people to develop their own strategies for issues that they care about has proven to be highly effective.
Once selected and trained, the Global Changemakers are allowed to apply for funds to start up their own initiatives. So far we have supported 280 projects world-wide. Most of the members of our network, have however initiated projects of their own, finding funding from different sources, but supported and mentored by the Global Changemakers network and partners.
After the event has taken place, we will open a call for applications for projects from participants to propose initiatives to bring about positive changes in their communities. The projects will be conducted by the Changemakers but mentoring and follow up from the core team and partners will be provided.

Descrizione del progetto

Description Frase (max. 500 characters):

Voces Comunes (Common Voices) is a communicational training project for the youth of indigenous and afro descendant communities in Colombia. In which through: A) An 8 days workshop, B) A continuos technical and theoretical accompaniment and C) A second workshop (a 4 days re enforcement workshop), the communities create their own communication collective and learn to produce their own content and media. Our goal is that giving them this knowledge and the necesary equipment, the youth represents communities interest and express themselves freely, and use communication and ICT as a tool for change, social inclusion, fostering self-recognition and community empowerment. Voces Comunes is also a place on the Internet where the ethnical minorities, that are often invisible to its governments and predominant cultures, can communicate, connect, interact, gather and share all the content produced by them as a result from the project, making a noticeable impact.

Project Summary (max. 2000 characters):

Voces Comunes is a communication project developed for the youth of indigenous and afro-descendent communities in Colombia. Through practical workshops in their territories and continous accompaniment, they learn how to operate the computer, audio and video equipment that the project provides them, the communities will acknowledge and strengthen their communication skills with the use of the ICTs. All this through: A) An 8 days workshop, B) A continuos technical and theoretical accompaniment, C) A second workshop (a 4 days re enforcement workshop), D) the communities create their own communication collective and learn to produce their own content and media, allowing them to share their visions, cultures and processes in a better way, a way of their own.

Communication is a powerful tool that contributes to social inclusion, fostering self-recognition and community empowerment. It provides communities with the possibility to design and disseminate messages not just about their cosmovision but also using their own language and symbols. If such messages emerge from each community, they will respond to their particular context and, therefore, they will contribute to actual empowerment and self-advocacy. If youth of ethnical communities have access to the new technologies they will be able to produce accurate information about themselves. Moreover, they will have the power to make visible their experiences, needs and strategies to cope with conflicts. Through this, they can make their voices heard and find echo in other communities. Voces Comunes, being a network in itself, understands networking as a suitable and desirable outcome towards the strengthening of local and global relationships.

Due to our focus on the youth of ethnical minorities, Voces Comunes support community objectives related with their youth as: A) The participants of the project in each community strengthens their role and commitment within, they become the voices of their communities. B) The partincipants find the importance of communication as a motor for expressing their realities and as a tool for preserving their culture and surviving the challenges they face. C) In zones of violence, armed conflict and paramilitarism, the young participants of Voces Comunes have a new and different life option. D) Using the knowledge in communication acquired in the workshops, they can have an additional source of economical income. E) The young participants assume a new roll within their communities: they become the teachers in the communication for the generations that follows.

Voces Comunes has a website in which disseminates the contents produce by the communities and encourage the visibility, social inclusion, free expressions and interactions of each one. It allows communities participating in the project to share their content and find out what others have produced. In this website they will make evident problems they have in common, at the same time that they will identify successful conflict resolution strategies to reproduce. Our goal through this website is to consolidate a network in which the communities that are part of the project can post and share their own content and see the productions that others communities made. A place where they can comment, learn from each other experiences and share them with the world. With Voces Comunes, the indigenous and afro-descendent communities of the region will take advantage of Internet to be visible, heard, known and included.

The final version of our website (www.vocescomunes.com) will be online in two weeks, meanwhile please watch our videos: https://vimeo.com/user25657508 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_Xy3WCI0mWBJlntbgaa3g/videos

Obiettivi ed elementi di innovazione

- Establish communications collectives formed by young members of each community. We've achieved this by conforming the ideal group of young people as one of the first activities in the workshop.
- Sustain a project in which indigenous and afro-descent communities use communication as a tool for change, social inclusion and community empowerment. We've achieved this with the workshops, its practical exercises and motivational talks on the power of communication, as well as following every step of their learning process.
- Familiarize participants with the possibilities offered by the ICTs so they can produce and disseminate their own communicational products. We've achieved this with the workshops and by resolving every doubt they have.
- Establish the Voces Comunes network, a site in which many ethnical communities can connect, be seen, heard and included. A network that will help them strengthen their survival processes and life projects, and allow them to know the ones that others face. We achieve this by a continuos update of the Voces Comunes site and the interaction of its social networks.
- Disseminate the media content produce by each community in different platforms. We've achieved this A) through screenings in each community to show the productions the collectives made throughout the workshop, B) through Voces Comunes’ site and social media, and C) through applications to film festivals.
- Provide each community with basic equipment so they have the tools to produce their media content. The 4 communities attended so far have received a basic communicational kit.

- Voces Comunes started operations more than a year ago. During this time we have formed our professional staff and consolidated our field research that allowed us to start working with 3 indigenous communities (from the Nasa´s and Arhuaco´s people) and 1 afro-descent community (La Boquilla) in Colombia. - We have designed and developed a 8-day workshop for each one of them, in which a group of young people that represents the community create their own communication collective and learns to produce media content and express themselves trough video, photos and audios. So far, we have 8 productions made by the communities after we developed the workshops. In this productions they've used the knowledge and equipments acquired, and most of all, they've used their own culture as inspiration. All their media products will be posted in Voces Comunes’ website (which is in the last phase of construction). - We have also made the research and approach in order to attend and work whit the next (8) indigenous and afro descendant communities in Colombia. - Other results achieved by the project: Number of participants of the workshops developed so far: 60 people Number of etnical communities attended: 4 Number of communication collectives created: 4 Number of video produced by the project: 36 Number of excersices of video produce by each community during the workshops: 6 Number of video productions made by the communities after the workshops: 8 Number of communicational kits given: 4

What lessons can others learn from your project? (max. 1500 characters):

- Communication and free expression should be more democratic because everyone can tell stories and everyone has stories to tell.
- Ethnical communities want and are ready to tell their own stories. They don’t allways need others to talk about their realities.
- Even tough Internet offers many different content, the digital users are interested in what the ethnical communities have to say and in seeing them in equal conditions (they can also be media producers).
-Communication is not only useful to inform, but to generate social changes.
- The indigenous and afro-descendant communities of Latin America are facing similar realities and challenges in order to survive. This is why they want to learn from the survival processes that other communities face.
- Like us, the ethnical minorities also have a voice and want to use it. As it has been said to us, they are planning to be the “best ancestors of history”, therefore they want to leave their legacy and show their culture, cosmovision and social problems through the use of ICTs.
- Even though the young representatives of the communities have not grown up using the ICTs, they know the importance they have and are eager to learn how to use them. Its commitment in this matter can be seen in the videos they’ve produce by themselves since we developed the workshops.

Description Frase (max. 500 characters):

Promotion of Peace within understanding of other cultures and traditions portrayed with the aid of Art-
Helping children gain an education in Africa with the exhibition of art works.

Project Summary (max. 2000 characters):

Teachers from around Europe are invited on a yearly base to participate in this project. The project encourages students to learn the English language and helps portray the importance of a universal language.
The project can act as a bridge from grammar into the spoken word
Bringing schools and the subjects together is paramount to progress in helping maintain peace for future generation in a vastly changing world. One of the main objectives within the murals project is to promote peace within understanding.
By understanding other cultures we also understand ourselves better.
In this life nowhere do our ideals meet the actual more truly than in how we relate to each other, in how we make, sustain and are friends.
As the world is becoming more and more global and we coexist on a more global level we can’t just think there’s only one right way of living or that any one is valid. The need for coexistence makes the coexistence of cultures and beliefs necessary. In order to not make such mistakes, the best thing we can do is get to know other cultures, while also getting to know our own.
This is exactly what the murals project sets out to archive
The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.
This project helps students to develop different skills : improve the teaching and learning of the English language; increase the use of ICT; improve the relationships and the knowledge among schools and cultural backgrounds in Europe; develop the main competencies though different activities: Treatment of information and Digital competence, Linguistic Communicative competence, Knowledge and interaction, citizenship, Cultural and Artistic competencies, Autonomy and personal initiative competence.
Students can show and increase their creativity while they create the murals, write short texts or produce different works (PowerPoint /prezi presentations, short videos and blog entries). Most of the works are produced in English and Visual Education Lessons, but they include contents of other subjects such as sciences, geography, history, music and citizenship in cooperation with the school library teams.
The idea of creating murals and short texts to accompany the murals as explanations is deeply based on cooperative work. The founding school Elizabeth gave the partners all the necessary instructions and guidelines to participate in the project, so that the participant teachers and students could work together and at their own rhythms/ pace, in order to develop the items and main subjects chosen .Students worked in groups to create the murals. Throughout the project ideas and suggestions are exchanged between the participant teachers on the net (the project continues to grow in numbers and ideas every year.)
Each participant school was free to use the software/ ICT tools teachers and students considered most suitable to achieve the aims of the project, in order to enhance the production of the murals and as a way to show their art works, on the website. On the twin space students can also learn about other web 2.0 tools that their partners have selected to show their murals (for instance photo puzzle, photo decorator, photo Peach. Voki, glogster, BlogSpot, Word Press, among others). Lousã team worked on prezi, PowerPoint, Photo peach, Movie maker, Microsoft auto collage etc. Creativity can be shown and developed while students produce the murals, write messages and short articles and create presentations for the twin space and blog.

The fact that conflict has always existed among mankind and on a partial bases of misunderstanding and negative attitudes, with modern technologies we can make far greater steps than ever before in resolving this problem. The color of a mans skin being of no more significance than the color of his eyes can be underlined with the realization of similarities of culture, traditions and beliefs.
Never before has the youth of today had as much hope, for they are the adults of tomorrow.Technolagey is the stepping stone to peace.
An access window in to other human beings lives is open to many more than ever before. This murals project is another important method to help break the chains of negative thinking.

The European youth murals project has taken on a new direction which I feel to be a very positive step. The new stage helps students gain values. The murals art work exhibitions has enabled the project to begin gaining sponsours. This has lead to helping feed a village and whats more has so far enabled three children to gain an education in the surrounding village. The movement is gaining interest and I hope will lead to materials and a new school extension being built. The info can be seen on the web of the murals project and within the link to the other connecting blog, web. https://childrenhelpingchildrenwithart.wordpress.com/escola-elisabeths-donation-of-food/ https://childrenhelpingchildrenwithart.wordpress.com/an-education-provided-for-a-child-in-needthe-first-of-many/

Descrizione del progetto

Description Frase (max. 500 characters):

It gives youth the tools to access a range of socio-economic and political rights.

Project Summary (max. 2000 characters):

The idea was born we have realised that ICT plays an important role in youth, especially girls and young women in facilitating community engagement with civil society; technology inspires to maximize the full potential and positive establishment connections with the communities.
“Technology has become the driving force of change in the modern world. It has altered our economic structures and ways we communicate”. – Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Access to knowledge has become an effective force for transforming social, economic and political life globally. Thousands of girls leave schools with the hope of developing a career and sustainable life that often turns into a daydream.
ICT literacy plays a vital role in the growth and development of any nation, and research has shown that the higher the rate of ICT literacy, the better the potential to succeed. A high level of ICT literacy can reduce poverty and crime, contribute to economic growth, and improve the quality of life because people, when they can read information regarding HIV/Aids and other social issues, are able to make informed choices and feel more confident about them-selves.
With an HIV prevalence rate of 16.6 per cent amongst South Africans aged between 15 – 49 years, South Africa has the largest HIV epidemic in the world.
It is estimated that 316 900 adult South Africans and 63 600 South African children were newly infected with HIV during 2011. This equates to an incidence of 1042 new HIV infections per day.
National mortality has strikingly increased by more than 86 per cent between 1997 and 2011 and HIV has been a significant contributor.
By 2011, the country had an estimated 2.01 million orphaned children as a result of AIDS. The integration of HIV/AIDS awareness into ICT literacy skills training is an innovative method that attracts girls and women, it’s motivates them to continue participating in the project now and beyond.

Obiettivi ed elementi di innovazione

Addressing ICT’s and delivering quality computer training and the use of mobile phone for youth, especially girls and young women in townships and rural communities of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa is perhaps the greatest challenge facing South Africa. Accessing to global information through ICT, has empowered the disadvantaged communities to make informed choices and decisions regarding their socio-economic development and be effective in the society.
In the rural context, ICT and related e-applications has enhanced opportunities to generate income and combat poverty, hunger, ill-health and illiteracy, and are keys to improving governance and rural services. As we bridge the digital divide, we narrow the chasm that separates those with and without access to information and knowledge, thereby broadening opportunities for better life. Greater access means earlier achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. It means less poverty and hunger, and more environmental sustainability. And it has translated into greater equality and empowerment for youth, especially girls and women.
Information Communication and Technology- ICT has provided sustainable solutions. Today’s ICT cuts across all fields of life and governance. The ICT industry offers exciting job opportunities to people with computer skills.

What lessons can others learn from your project? (max. 1500 characters):

ICT Education for youth, especially girls is the most successful tool to bring the positive change in the lives of poor and marginalized young people. We are providing access education with minimal operational overhead. Transparency must be maintained and considered biggest tool to achieve the objectives particularly in the developing countries as where we are currently serving. The integration of HIV/AIDS awareness into ICT literacy skills training is an innovative method that attracts girls and women, it’s motivates them to continue participating in the project now and beyond.
To conduct small oral test at the beginning of the implementation of the project, monthly assessments to be conducted and at end of the project to evaluate the overall of the achievement of the project. This information is the key to the organisation to measure the impact, the success and the achievement of the project and how you can improve in the future and how the project can be replicate in the other communities.
This information will give the beneficiaries an idea if they did achieve their goals and able to go to the next level in their life.
To be committed and empowered disadvantaged and underprivileged girls and young women who may have thought they would never be able to do that as we are living in a World of 4 R's: Reading, wRiting, aRithmetic and computeR literacy

Barriers and Solutions (max. 1000 characters):
In the initial time the communities were not collaborating towards the project and they have negative perception towards ICT education, especially men. More awareness was conducted to make them aware of the important of the ICT and role it plays into our lives. Although valuable lessons may be learned from best practices, there is no one formula for determining the best level of ICT integration in the educational system. Significant challenges that policymakers and planners, educators, education administrators, and other stakeholders need to consider include educational policy and planning, infrastructure, language and content, capacity building, and financing. “The program starts with identifying issues that are close to the youth and their communities and then demonstrates how technology can be used to make their voices heard on these issues.” “It is important to let people experience the technology in a non-threatening, fun way.” “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others”
